We walked barefoot down a wet-sand aisle, this dusty-rose chiffon blowing sideways in the wind, laughing so hard the photographer gave up on formal portraits and just shot candids. One of the best nights of my life. Now it's your turn — dance hard enough that the photos are blurry.”

“Paris, 1998. A tiny bistro in the 6th, a table by the window, and a man who ordered for me in French he'd practiced all week. I wore this black slip dress and did not stop laughing until two in the morning. It has since survived a wedding in Prague and a gallery opening in Berlin — but it will always be the dress from that first night. I hope it gets a few more cities.”

“My daughter wore this in the semifinals of her state pageant. She didn't take the crown that night — she still laughs that the gown outshone everyone on stage. Three appearances total: the semifinals, a charity gala, and her senior recital. Every crystal accounted for, cross my heart. She's grown now, and the gown is ready for a new reign.”

“My aunt wore this exactly once — her fortieth birthday, a dinner at the Plaza — and then it hung in her closet like a museum piece, unworn for twenty years. When she cleared the house she put it in a donation bin. I rescued it the same afternoon, because some dresses deserve to be worn again, not recycled. It has never been photographed. It should be, on you.”

“Prom, 2011. My date's bow tie was the exact green of this dress — he'd matched it on purpose, and I didn't know until he knocked on the door. We were voted best dressed, and my grandmother cried in the photo booth. I kept it for years, hoping a niece would want it. My niece grew up to be six feet tall and allergic to the color green. So it goes to you — may your night be as kind as ours was.”

“My daughter married in Tuscany in the summer of 1988, in a stone courtyard that smelled of jasmine and warm rosemary. I wore this champagne lamé with the sleeves she picked out herself, and danced the tarantella with my father-in-law until the string quartet gave up and the band took over. It has hung in a garment bag for nearly four decades — cleaned once, in 1989, and never touched by sunlight since. I am eighty-four now, and it is time someone else wore it somewhere wonderful.”
